I would say go your separate ways. You will eventually anyway so just let this be the reason. It sounds like a good one to me. He wasn't drunk enough that he couldn't remember but still defended her??!! That's some crap. Just go be successful at what ever you are going to school for and let him regret breaking the friendship over a stupid party!! Good luck!!
